THRIVE Women’s Business Mentoring Kickoff Event

Central Coast Women Business Owners’ Consortium Hosting
a Mentor Training and Networking Event for Local Women

San Luis Obispo, Calif. (July 25, 2019): A consortium of Local Women Business Owners, led by Polly Mertens of Thrive Outdoor Adventures, announced they are set to launch a women’s business mentoring community on the Central Coast this fall. In collaboration with the Cal Poly Women In Business (WIB) and Communication Studies Clubs, the THRIVE Women’s Business Mentoring Kickoff event will bring female students and business women from around San Luis Obispo county together to learn, connect and foster healthy mentoring relationships. The event will take place from 4:30 to 7:30 PM on Wednesday, October 23rd at MindBody 651 Tank Farm Road, San Luis Obispo, CA.

The event is expected to attract a diverse array of local business women and female Cal Poly students interested in working together to build short- and long-term mentoring relationships. Potential mentors and mentees can expect an informal, intimate and confidential environment enabling the free exchange of advice and guidance learned from experience. Attendees will learn about what mentoring is and isn’t, how to become or find a mentor, and have an opportunity to be a part of the future leadership of THRIVE’s mentorship programs.

It’s reported that more than 70% of companies in the Fortune 500 have mentoring programs for their employees*. The results show that mentored employees earn more money, are more productive, experience less stress and get promoted more rapidly. Mentoring for entrepreneurs is also extremely important and effective as is showcased locally with the success of the start-ups who receive counseling and mentoring through the Women’s Business Center and the Cal Poly Hot House.

The consortium of local women business owners behind the new mentoring community include professional services, health and wellness, education and online marketing. The consortium founder, Polly Mertens, is a Cal Poly MBA graduate, a serial entrepreneur, business and life coach, and has been an integral part of the Women’s Business Center of SLO for over 10 years. The Cal Poly Women in Business Club provides local students with the skills and support needed to succeed in college and life. The Cal Poly Communication Studies Club assists students interested in the communications field with resources, networking and social events.

The primary goal of the October event is to connect female Cal Poly students and young women professionals throughout San Luis Obispo county with like-minded female business mentors to help them better navigate career, business and life decisions. No prior mentoring experience is required.

“San Luis Obispo County is ripe for a women’s mentoring community. As the 6th largest region in the US for female entrepreneurship, it became obvious to me that we needed a way to connect the professional women and experienced business owners with younger, up-and-coming female leaders as a way to pass down wisdom and give back to the next generation.” said Polly Mertens. The kick off event is the first of many THRIVE events planned including monthly “Walk and Talk” meetups and larger quarterly events to be held throughout the Central Coast.

Registration is now open for the event (Eventbrite link). Tickets are $10 per person and college students are free with valid ID.
